About this postcard

A quiet pond in Roger Williams Park reflects a small stone-and-iron footbridge, a grassy bank, and a stand of tall evergreens and deciduous trees, with a rustic shelter or pavilion partly hidden among the trees at right; the card titles the scene "Evening Shadows." Roger Williams Park, laid out in the 1870s on land donated by the family of Providence's founder, became one of the city's principal Victorian pleasure grounds, with lakes, bridges, and winding carriage drives. The view is typical of early twentieth-century park scenery postcards that celebrated shaded promenades and still water.
