About this postcard
A corner view of the new F. W. Woolworth Co. five-and-ten store at 39th Street and Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, with its red-and-gold ground-floor fascia lettered "F. W. WOOLWORTH CO." and a tall, vertically ribbed cream facade rising above the busy sidewalk. Woolworth's was the dominant American five-and-dime chain of the twentieth century, and this mid-century branch stood in the commercial heart of Midtown near the public library and department-store district. Pedestrians, a yellow bus and period automobiles fill the street in this hand-colored, photo-based view credited to Keystone.
