Fabric daisy "You are a" novelty card, Waltham, MA, circa 1901

About this postcard

The card sets up a pun and lets the attached cloth daisy finish it. A printed line reads "You are a" and stops there, so the flower supplies the compliment: you are a daisy, a common turn of the era for calling someone first-rate. The blossom is cut from fabric with a green ribbon stem and a small white bow, framed by a printed red vine border. Applied fabric and ribbon trims were a small fad in early-1900s novelty cards, cheap to mail for a penny and sentimental enough to keep. This one was never written on or sent, so the joke stayed intact.
