About this postcard

The view follows the curving boulevard and its concrete arch span toward the stone arch railroad bridge over the Conemaugh River, with mill buildings, a smokestack, a passing freight train, and wooded hills beyond. The Pennsylvania Railroad's masonry bridge survived the Johnstown Flood of May 31, 1889, when debris piled against it and caught fire, and the disaster made it known well beyond the city. The printed caption calls it the "Historic Stone Bridge which became world known in 1889" and pairs it with the riverside boulevard as the city's sights.
