Famous Stone Bridge and Boulevard, Johnstown, Pennsylvania, circa 1934

Card type
Linen

About this postcard

A view along the curving boulevard and its concrete arch span toward the stone arch railroad bridge over the Conemaugh River at Johnstown, with mill buildings, a smokestack, a passing freight train and wooded hills beyond. The stone bridge is the Pennsylvania Railroad's massive 1880s masonry crossing, famous for having withstood the Johnstown Flood of May 31, 1889, when debris piled against it and caught fire. The caption presents the bridge and the riverside boulevard as the city's principal sights in the years after the flood.
