Farm workers and a child hoeing a field

About this postcard

Five people pause in a row-crop field, each holding a long-handled hoe. Two men in work clothes and hats stand at the left, a small boy in overalls and a straw hat stands in the center, and two women in light dresses and wide-brimmed sun hats stand at the right. Scattered trees and open farmland fill the horizon behind them. The names written on the card identify the group, including three members of the Henke family. The scene shows the hand labor that still shaped row-crop farming in the early 20th century, when families and hired hands worked fields with hoes and horse-drawn equipment.
