About this postcard
A wide view of the Federal Correctional Institution at Ashland, Kentucky: a long, low brick complex with white-trimmed windows, a small white cupola on the left wing and a square tower with a hipped roof at the right, set behind broad lawns and a curving drive, with wooded hills beyond. The institution was opened by the U.S. Bureau of Prisons around 1940 as one of the new federal correctional facilities of that era. The card's sunset-tinted sky and pastel coloring are typical of mid-century linen postcards.
