Ferry boats leaving San Francisco, California, circa 1935

About this postcard

The Southern Pacific ferry steamer El Paso, her white superstructure lettered "SOUTHERN PACIFIC" and "EL PASO," pulls away from her slip on the San Francisco waterfront, with the Ferry Building's clock tower rising above the red-roofed piers behind her. Completed in 1898, the Ferry Building was the busiest transit point in the city, and the Southern Pacific's bay ferries carried commuters and trains' passengers to and from Oakland and Sausalito until the Bay Bridge and Golden Gate Bridge ended the ferry era in the late 1930s. The card's linen-textured stock and Curt Teich job number date it to that transitional decade.
