Ferry Building and Bay Bridge, San Francisco, CA, 1945

About this postcard

The Ferry Building's clock tower rises above the Embarcadero, with the Bay Bridge behind it and a busy street with pedestrians and traffic below. The caption calls the building "San Francisco's stately Ferry Bldg. that must bow its head to the march of progress," a nod to the bridges that had taken over much of the cross-bay ferry traffic the building once served. By the 1940s the Ferry Building remained a city landmark and transit hub, but its great years as the ferry gateway to San Francisco had passed.
