Ferry Building and bay with ferries and streetcars, San Francisco, California, circa 1935

About this postcard

The card shows the San Francisco Ferry Building and its tall clock tower from across the busy Embarcadero plaza, with ferries crossing the bay and streetcars looping through the foreground. Completed in 1898 to the designs of architect A. Page Brown, the Ferry Building served as the terminus for the transbay ferries and was for decades the busiest entry point into the city; its tower clock and the arched arcades remain landmarks on the Embarcadero. The linen-era coloring shows the building before the 1930s-40s alterations that later obscured the tower's base.
