The Fine Arts Center on Thomson Drive in Lynchburg, Virginia, is a low brick and glass entrance wing with a tall, windowless stage house rising behind it. A curving drive with planted islands leads across the lawn, a station wagon is parked at the right, and a bare tree casts a long shadow over the grass. The building's plain, blocky massing fits the mid-century institutional style of postwar American arts centers, which often gathered performance, exhibition, and classroom space into one civic complex.
