A hillside view of First Baptist Church in Lynchburg, Virginia, its red-brick Gothic Revival sanctuary topped by a tall needle spire and rising above surrounding trees, frame houses, and a white picket fence. The Blue Ridge foothills lie in the distance. The congregation organized in 1832 and built this Court Street sanctuary in the 1880s; its spire stood as a landmark in the city's church architecture.
