About this postcard

A Waltham watch advertisement aimed at graduates shows a smiling young man and woman in mortarboard caps above three gold Waltham wristwatches and two rings. The headline calls Waltham "First Choice Among Graduates" and says the company has been America's traditional graduation watch for nearly 100 years. The card lists the "Barker" at $55, the "Aleda" at $71.50, and the "Nora" at $47.50, all 17-jewel models with prices including federal tax. An arched vignette at upper left frames a castle-like stone tower, and the lower panel directs customers to Texas Jewelry Co. at 721 W. Commerce Street for fine jewelry and diamonds for graduation gifts. Waltham, founded in 1850, was one of the country's leading watchmakers, and the federal-tax note reflects the excise tax on jewelry that began in the 1940s.
