About this postcard
Street-level view of the First Church of Christ, Scientist, on Central Park West at 96th Street in Manhattan. The church rises from a rusticated base through tall arched windows to a columned entrance front and a stone spire. A horse-drawn carriage and a few pedestrians wait at the curb; bare trees and a light dusting on the ground suggest a winter day. The congregation dedicated the Carrère and Hastings building in 1904, and it stood among the grandest Christian Science churches of its era. A visitor named Helen wrote that she had gone there on a Sunday morning and would be home at the end of the week.
