About this postcard

First Presbyterian Church in Northville, Michigan, is a red brick meetinghouse with a white columned portico, a cross on the front wall, and a white cupola with arched openings above the pediment. A round emblem or clock face sits in the gable, and a low signboard stands in the shrubbery in front. The printed caption calls it the oldest Protestant church structure west of the Alleghany Mountains in continuous use as a church, organized in 1829, with the original portion of the present building dedicated in 1846. The columned portico and pediment reflect the classical taste common in mid-19th-century Michigan church architecture, and the congregation's 1829 organization places it among the early institutions of a town that was still a small settlement at the time.
