The image shows a small log cabin with a shingled gable roof and a rough rail fence, set in tall grass among trees. The printed caption identifies it as the first school house in South Dakota at Vermillion. Vermillion, in the southeastern corner of the state, was an early settlement and became the seat of Clay County and home to the University of South Dakota. The card treats the log school as a relic of the pioneer period, when such simple buildings served the first schools on the Dakota frontier.
