About this postcard
A small log cabin with a shingled gable roof and a rough rail fence stands among tall grass and trees, identified by the printed caption as the first school house in South Dakota at Vermillion. Vermillion, in the southeastern corner of the state, was settled in the 1850s-60s and became the seat of Clay County and home to the University of South Dakota; the card presents the pioneer-era log school as a local relic. The image is a coarse halftone reproduction of a photograph, printed on tan stock.
