First State Capitol of Tennessee, Knoxville, 1904

About this postcard

A street-corner view of the two-story clapboard building known as Tennessee's first state capitol. A long covered porch runs along the front, and brick chimneys rise from the roof. Knoxville served as the state capital from 1796 until 1812, and the plain frame structure was preserved and pointed out as the seat of the earliest state government. A utility pole, a small tree, and neighboring buildings frame the scene, with taller buildings faintly visible behind.
