First tunnel on Needles Road, Custer State Park, SD, 1932

About this postcard

The view looks through the first tunnel on the Needles Road from the south, a rough rock arch cut through a granite outcropping in Custer State Park. A dirt roadway passes beneath the opening, with pine trees on the slopes above. The Needles Highway, completed in 1922, threads the granite pinnacles of the Black Hills. Peter Norbeck championed the route as a scenic drive through the park, and its narrow tunnels and tight curves made it a well-known motor tour.
