About this postcard
The picture shows the first stone tunnel on the Needles Road from the south, a rough archway blasted through a granite outcropping with a dirt roadway passing beneath it and pine trees on the slopes above. The Needles Highway, completed in 1922 through the granite pinnacles of Custer State Park, was engineered by Peter Norbeck and named for the needle-like rock formations it threads; its narrow tunnels and hairpin curves made it a celebrated scenic drive in the Black Hills.
