About this postcard
Pink flamingos stand on and around mounded mud nests on a small island in a pond, with white waterfowl swimming behind them and a white chick in the foreground; flowering shrubs frame the scene at left and right. The caption calls the flock the unique feature of Hialeah Race Course, the Thoroughbred track near Miami whose infield birds became a signature attraction. The flamingos were imported from Cuba and South America, and the text records that 1939 was the first season they were raised to maturity in the United States, with 62 hatched; the young are white and take on their pink coloring as they mature. Hialeah fed the flock a mixture of boiled rice, dried shredded shrimp, grains, and cod liver oil.
