A small flatboat carries a boatman and several passengers along Echo River inside Mammoth Cave, Kentucky. Rough rock walls close in on the dark water, and the scene is dimly lit. The printed caption places the river 350 feet below the earth's surface.
In the early 1900s, a boat ride on Echo River was a standard part of the Mammoth Cave tour. Guides took visitors through underground passages that were otherwise inaccessible, and the river became one of the cave's best-known sights.
