The Fleetwood Hotel fills the frame: a tan, multi-tiered block topped by a rooftop observatory tower, palms and shrubs along its base, and a row of 1920s automobiles parked in the drive.
Miami Beach in the mid-1920s was riding the Florida land boom, and winter visitors came for the ocean bathing and the new resort hotels rising along the beach. A rooftop observatory was a common flourish on boom-era hotels, giving guests a view over the island and the water.
