About this postcard

A tinted view across Fletcher Lake toward the Ocean Grove shore, where a long row of wooden Victorian cottages, pavilions and a small red-roofed boat landing line the water; a single rowboat with several figures is out on the lake. Ocean Grove was laid out from 1869 as a Methodist camp-meeting resort on the New Jersey coast, and its tightly packed wooden cottages and tabernacle architecture made it one of the best-known Victorian seaside communities in America. The lake, named for Methodist Episcopal bishop Calvin Kingsley's associate John Fletcher, lay just inside the resort's bounds.
