Flock of sheep crossing Grand Coulee Dam, Grand Coulee, WA, 1930

About this postcard

A large flock of sheep stretches across the top of Grand Coulee Dam under a partly cloudy sky, with water spilling over the dam and the reservoir behind. Joe Hodgen walks at the front of the flock. The caption names him as the herder who crossed the dam each spring with 2,500 ewes and lambs on the way to forest ranges, an annual drive that newsreel cameras recorded and showed around the world. The scene sets a routine seasonal sheep drive against the scale of a major Columbia River dam.
