Floral ship valentine with Statue of Liberty, New York, 1909

Card type

About this postcard

A fantasy valentine shows a ship built of blue forget-me-nots, its flower-lined sails bearing a red heart. White doves carrying hearts fly above, and the Statue of Liberty stands in the background. The printed verse sends the vessel "so deeply laden / With flowers and my devotion" across the ocean to "the fairest maiden." By 1909 the Statue of Liberty was a familiar emblem in New York Harbor, giving the romantic fantasy a patriotic American setting.
