Florence mine and Newmont mill, Goldfield, NV, circa 1948

Card type
Real photo

About this postcard

The photograph looks over the Newmont Mining Corporation's Goldfield operations, with the headframe of the old Florence mine rising at center and the 100-ton cyanide mill at right. Columbia Mountain fills the background. The Florence was one of Goldfield's early bonanza mines, and by this time it served as the main working shaft for the Newmont operation. The mill was built in 1948 to treat ore from a 1947 gold discovery on the White Horse claim, ground that old-timers in the Goldfield district had long considered barren. Columbia Mountain was where Harry Stimler and Billy Marsh made the first gold discovery on the Sandstorm claim in December 1903, setting off the rush that built Goldfield into one of Nevada's great boom camps.
