About this postcard

The entrance to the State Hospital at Massillon, Ohio, is shown as a formal, fan-shaped flower bed of concentric plantings set in a lawn at the end of a curving drive. Two dark automobiles are parked on the roadway behind, with a wooded ridge beyond. Massillon State Hospital opened in 1898 as a state psychiatric institution serving northeastern Ohio and later became Heartland Behavioral Healthcare. Landscaped entrance grounds were a common feature of state-hospital campuses, meant to present an orderly and welcoming face to the public.
