Fort Dearborn reconstruction, Chicago World's Fair, 1933

About this postcard

A reconstructed log stockade and blockhouse with a central tower, palisade fence, and frame barracks stand beside a roadway and lamp post. The caption calls the complex the "third Fort Dearborn," rebuilt on the Lake Michigan shore for the 1933 Century of Progress Exposition. The original fort, established at the mouth of the Chicago River in 1803, was destroyed in 1812, and the deaths of its inhabitants that year became known as the Dearborn Massacre. The fair placed the replica among exhibits that linked Chicago's pioneer past to its modern lakefront.
