About this postcard

An elevated view looks across the water of the Rigolets, with the long truss spans of the Rigolets Bridge crossing the strait and the red-brick walls and grassy grounds of Fort Pike in the foreground. Fort Pike, begun in 1819 and named for Brigadier General Zebulon Pike, was part of the coastal defense system guarding the passes into Lake Pontchartrain and New Orleans. The caption places the fort on the Old Spanish Trail (U.S. 90) and notes that it had recently been restored and converted into a state park. It describes the bridge as the toll-free span over the Rigolets, a noted fishing resort linking Lake Borgne and Lake Pontchartrain, and points out that the site lies within the corporate limits of New Orleans, about 35 miles from Canal Street.
