About this postcard

An elevated view looks across the water of the Rigolets, with the long truss spans of the Rigolets Bridge crossing the strait and the red-brick walls and grassy grounds of Fort Pike in the foreground. Fort Pike was built between 1819 and 1827 as part of the coastal defense system guarding the passes into Lake Pontchartrain and New Orleans, and was named for Brigadier General Zebulon Pike. The bridge carries the highway across the Rigolets, the narrow tidal strait linking Lake Pontchartrain with Lake Borgne.
