About this postcard

Bathers wade in the calm, rock-girt cove of Forty Steps Bathing Beach at Nahant, Massachusetts, with low rocky ledges and a sandy shore in the foreground and a large shingled summer house crowning the wooded headland beyond. The caption identifies the house as the mansion of Senator Henry Cabot Lodge, the Massachusetts historian and statesman who summered at Nahant and whose family long kept a house on the peninsula. Nahant, a small rocky town on a peninsula jutting into Massachusetts Bay northeast of Boston, was a fashionable summer resort noted for its rocky coves and bathing beaches in the early twentieth century.
