Fountain on Capitol Plaza by night, Washington, D.C., circa 1940

Card type
Linen

About this postcard

Night view of an illuminated fountain playing in a circular basin on Capitol Plaza, with the United States Capitol dome lit in white at the right and a dark government office building with glowing windows at the left. The Capitol Plaza fountain sits at the foot of Capitol Hill near the Union Station end of the grounds, and the card's saturated hand-colored night effect is typical of mid-century linen postcards of the capital's monuments. The dome shown is the cast-iron dome completed in 1866 with the Statue of Freedom on top.
