About this postcard

A long range of open market sheds stretches along a broad dirt street, with rows of horse-drawn wagons and carts backed up to the stalls and vendors clustered beneath the awnings; commercial brick buildings and a white multi-story block rise behind. The French Market is the historic public market of New Orleans' French Quarter, whose origins trace to a trading post established near the Mississippi riverfront in the late 18th century and which was rebuilt in brick after fires in the early 1800s. By the time this card was made, the market was a bustling wholesale and retail produce exchange serving the city's grocers, restaurants and households.
