About this postcard

A bronze statue of the German novelist and Low German dialect poet Fritz Reuter (1810–1874) stands on a tall stone pedestal, a wreath hung at its base, amid lawns, flower beds and trees in Humboldt Park. Chicago's large German immigrant community raised the monument in Humboldt Park in the 1890s, and the park itself was laid out in the 1870s on the city's northwest side as one of its great West Park System pleasure grounds. The card presents the memorial as a landscaped civic shrine, with a yucca-like plant and bedding flowers in the foreground.
