About this postcard
A tall stone mill with a gabled roof stands beside a rocky stream, its lower wall washed by shallow water. A small arched bridge with a railing crosses the water in front of the mill, and bare, leafless trees frame the scene on both sides. Galt's Mill was a water-powered gristmill in the countryside outside Lynchburg, the sort of small operation that ground corn and wheat for surrounding farms and served as a gathering point for rural neighbors. The card was mailed in the summer of 1914, and the sender's note is a plain domestic report: she had been kept busy since coming home, nursing a foot she could not yet fit into a shoe, and had been too hurried to send a card from Roanoke.
