Gandy Bridge between Tampa and St. Petersburg, Florida, circa 1940

About this postcard

A view along the roadway of the Gandy Bridge, with its white wooden guard rails and line of lamp posts receding toward the far shore, a single red automobile approaching the camera. The card's own caption names it as the "Gandy Bridge, Six Miles Long, between Tampa and St. Petersburg, Fla." The Gandy Bridge opened in 1924 as a privately financed toll crossing of Old Tampa Bay, the first direct road link between Tampa and St. Petersburg, and it was long celebrated for its length and its fishing piers. It was later supplemented and replaced by newer parallel spans.
