Gandy Bridge, six miles long, Tampa to St. Petersburg, FL, 1953

About this postcard

A single red automobile approaches the camera along the roadway of the Gandy Bridge, between white wooden guard rails and a line of lamp posts that recede toward the far shore. The printed caption promotes the crossing as six miles long and notes that fishing from boats along the span was popular. The Gandy Bridge opened in 1924 as a privately financed toll crossing of Tampa Bay, the first direct road link between Tampa and St. Petersburg. Its length and the fishing it drew made it a familiar landmark, and newer parallel spans later supplemented and replaced the original structure.
