The garden side of the House of the Seven Gables in Salem, Massachusetts, shows the large, dark-shingled seventeenth-century mansion with its clustered gables, brick chimneys, and small entry porch, framed by flower beds. Built in 1668 for a Salem merchant, the house later became the model for Nathaniel Hawthorne's 1851 novel of the same name. By the 1920s it was a historic house museum, and the garden view presented it as a colonial landmark for visitors.
