Gay Head Light, Martha's Vineyard Island, Mass., circa 1901

About this postcard

The view shows the brick tower of Gay Head Light with its glass lantern room, sightseers crowding the gallery deck and more visitors gathered on the grass before the keeper's gambrel-roofed dwelling. The tower stands on the clay bluffs at the western end of Martha's Vineyard, in what is now Aquinnah; the 1856 tower is the third lighthouse on the site. Men in boaters and women in long white dresses suggest an excursion party, part of the summer trade that made the cliffs a popular destination in the early 1900s.
