About this postcard
The picture shows the brick tower of Gay Head Light with its glass lantern room, its gallery deck crowded with sightseers and more visitors gathered on the grass in front of the keeper's gambrel-roofed wooden dwelling. Gay Head Light stands on the clay bluffs at the western end of Martha's Vineyard, in what is now the town of Aquinnah; the brick tower shown was built in 1856 and is the third lighthouse on the site. The crowd of men in boaters and women in long white dresses suggests an excursion party of the kind that made the cliffs a popular summer destination in the early 1900s.
