Gay Head Lighthouse and clay cliffs, Gay Head, Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, circa 1910

About this postcard

The picture shows the Gay Head Lighthouse standing on the grassy headland above the vividly banded clay cliffs of Gay Head (now Aquinnah) on Martha's Vineyard, with several small outbuildings and a few tiny figures scattered along the bluff. The lighthouse, a brick tower with a lantern gallery, was built in 1856 and is the third light on this site, which was long tended by Wampanoag keepers from the Gay Head community. The caption's "Cottage City" refers to the neighboring resort town of Oak Bluffs, which bore that name in the late nineteenth century.
