About this postcard

A view looking down Gay Street in Knoxville, Tennessee, with multi-story commercial blocks lining the left side, red awnings over the storefronts, and a horse-drawn wagon at the right curb; utility poles and a web of trolley and telegraph wires cross the sky. Gay Street was Knoxville's principal commercial thoroughfare, and the buildings shown here date from the city's late-19th-century rebuilding after the Civil War. The card was published by the Detroit Photographic Co., known for its color-printed 'Phostint' views of American streets and landmarks.
