Gen. Sam Houston's Home, Huntsville, TX, circa 1930

Card type

About this postcard

The card shows Sam Houston's home, with a famous pecan tree at the left, the outdoor kitchen, the house, and the law office, all set beside a lake in the foreground. The lake reflects the buildings. The caption calls the place the "Mount Vernon of Texas," a nickname that likens the estate to George Washington's Virginia plantation. Sam Houston was a central figure in the Texas Revolution and the first president of the Republic of Texas, and the separate kitchen and law office reflect the working life of his 19th-century home.
