About this postcard
A two-story house with a porch stands in Waltham, Massachusetts, its front partly hidden by two large trees. Trolley tracks run across the street in the foreground, a reminder of the streetcar lines that served the city in the early 1900s. The caption and a handwritten note identify the house with Nathaniel Prentiss Banks (1816–1894), the Waltham-born politician and Union general. Banks was Speaker of the U.S. House, governor of Massachusetts, and a Civil War commander in the Potomac campaign and at New Orleans; he later returned to Congress and chaired the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
