At the base of a massive redwood, a man stands for scale, with more redwoods and a low building behind. The card identifies the tree as General Fremont and says John C. Fremont, usually spelled Frémont, used its hollow base as headquarters in 1846. It gives the tree's height as 285 feet and the hollow's floor as 20 by 13 feet. Big Trees Park, in the Santa Cruz Mountains, was a tourist stop known for its old-growth redwoods.
