About this postcard
The caption identifies the room as General Robert E. Lee's office in the basement of the chapel. The photograph shows a round table set with dishes, several chairs, a large dark cabinet at left, and a fireplace with shelves and books at right. The furnishings suggest a modest working room rather than a formal parlor. Lee served as president of Washington College, later Washington and Lee University, in Lexington, Virginia, from 1865 until his death in 1870. The chapel on campus became known as Lee Chapel. The card presents the basement office as a historic site associated with Lee's postwar years, when the former Confederate commander led a small Virginia college.
