Strollers in summer dress fill the Ocean City boardwalk, with beachgoers scattered across the sand toward the surf. American flags fly from lamp posts along the walk, and a long pavilion-like building lines the left side. The sender writes of riding the Ferris wheel the night before and wishes her friend could be there, a small glimpse of the amusements that made the boardwalk the center of the resort's summer life. Ocean City was laid out in 1879 as a dry, family-oriented resort on a barrier island south of Atlantic City.
