A man in a colonial-style coat and breeches clings to a steep rock face, posed as if carving his name into the stone. The scene illustrates a local legend that young George Washington carved his name at Natural Bridge, Virginia. Natural Bridge is a limestone arch in Rockbridge County, long promoted as a scenic wonder and a stop for travelers. By the early 20th century, such historical vignettes were common at tourist landmarks.
