About this postcard

A German Christmas and New Year greeting card, its central oval inscribed "Fröhliche Weihnachten und ein glückliches neues Jahr" (Merry Christmas and a happy New Year) in blackletter script. The message is framed by heavy gold-embossed holly leaves with red berries, a Gothic stone arch, and a radiant star at the base. Such gilded, deeply embossed greetings were a popular early-20th-century holiday format.
